Committee Updates
Community Service and Outreach
Submitted by:
 Jennifer Bastos, Chair

Committee Goal:
The goal of the committee this year is to plan, organize and coordinate the activities of the community service and outreach committee. We hope to reach out to the community and to make a positive impact through our hard work and dedication. The Committee met in September to work on a timeline for the year’s community service projects.

Community Outreach Ideas:
  • Habitat for Humanity – work on a house (Spring)
  • Ronald McDonald House (around holidays)
  • Boys and Girls Club – School Supply Drive (late Spring)
  • Read-Aloud – DE, DC or MD (anytime)
  • DC Central Kitchen – help serve food (anytime)
  • Capitol Area Food Bank – collect food at Fall Conference in time for holidays

This year we would like to choose three community service projects, one in each state. We would like to post the date and time of these events on the website early, so we can get as many people as possible to assist. We plan on having this information available soon.

Fall Conference:
This year’s Fall Conference included two community service events, a canned food drive and a silent auction. Tristate members did a great job supporting their community.

The Membership Committee is seeking volunteers to help with registration at the fall conference. If you are interested in helping with registration, please contact Jason VanSickle at jason.vansickle@pnc.com or 301.387.0355. The Membership Committee looks forward to seeing everyone at the fall conference.

Newsletter
Submitted by:  Melissa Rakes, Chair

The newsletter committee publishes four issues of News & Views each year. The committee strives to publish a newsletter that meets the interests of the DE-DC-ASFAA membership.

This year, the committee is working to:
  1. Report on Tri-state events and financial aid issues.
  2. Keep members informed about events and association news.
  3. Solicit articles based on current issues and interests.
  4. Examine methods to encourage and increase member contributions and readership.

The committee is always looking for suggestions and feedback. Please contact the editor, Melissa Rakes, with your ideas.

Notice for Upcoming Elections

Are you the next Tristate Leader? Do you know someone who is a leader in waiting? Five positions are available for the upcoming year.

Chair-Elect: This elected member will serve three years. The first year is spent watching and learning from the Chair; in the following year, s/he becomes the Chair for one year, and the subsequent year, s/he becomes Past-Chair and is responsible for Nominations and Elections. This person also attends EASFAA Council meetings as a non-voting member.

Vice-Chair: This is a one-year position; the elected member is responsible for organizing the Fall Conference and working with the Professional Training & Development Committee throughout the year.

Maryland, D.C., and Delaware Presidents: Each position is a two-year appointment. The elected member also serves as the state representative at EASFAA Council meetings.

Ask your colleagues if they might consider running. If so, please go online to www.dedcmdasfaa.org to submit nominations. If you have questions, contact Sarah Bauder, Past-Chair, at sbauder@umd.edu.
