NASFAA: Coming Soon to D.C.
Submitted by:  Aristea Williams, NASFAA Local Arrangements Committee

As you probably know, this year’s NASFAA conference will be held in Washington, D.C. As a result, a locally based committee is responsible for the Local Arrangements. The responsibilities of the committee include registration, sending out ‘DC teasers’ in the NASFAA news, providing entertainment ideas for registrants and their families, and assisting registrants during the conference.

This year, the Local Arrangements committee is headed by Barbara Miller, Director of Financial Aid at the University of Baltimore and the Vice President of EASFAA (and upcoming member of the NASFAA Nominating committee). The members of the committee are Jackie Daughtry-Miller, Independence Federal Savings Bank; Scott Filter, George Washington University; Cathy Geier, Trinity University; Richard Heath, Anne Arundel Community College; Dave Manning, National Education; Carol Parks, University of the District of Columbia; Sheila Perkins, Montgomery College; Precious Smith, Independence Federal Savings Bank; Cheryl Storie, University of Maryland University College; Travis Sturlagson, Montgomery College; Judy Taylor, Montgomery College; Cissy VanSickle, Bank of America; Aristea Williams, EDFUND; and Barbara Williams, American University-Washington College of Law.

The dedicated committee has been gathering information about the District to give to registrants and preparing for what will be an awesome task—registration for the NASFAA conference. One of the more memorable tasks has been to collect DC trivia to challenge NASFAA members. Test your knowledge now!

  1. Did you know that the District is not a city or state? It became the nation’s capital in 1800 when John Adams became a resident of the White House. DC currently has more residents than the state of Wyoming but less than Vermont.
  2. Did you know that the steps where the priest in the movie ‘The Exorcist’ met his untimely demise is located on the campus of Georgetown University?
  3. Did you know that some very famous people are from Washington, DC? The list includes soul singers Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway, musician Duke Ellington, composer John Phillip Sousa, and actress Helen Hayes.
