Neophyte 2006: A Barnburner Once Again
Submitted by:
Brandon Seidl, Financial Aid Specialist, Goucher College

The 2006 TriState Financial Aid Neophyte Workshop proved to be another success this year. The week starting October 15th offered a wide array of talented presenters, interactive case studies, and useful information to help in the individual development of financial aid offices all over the TriState area.

Sessions were held at Brighton Suites in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and channeled a variety of information ranging from the general financial aid process to verification and need-analysis. Those in attendance had the privilege to listen to successful financial aid representatives from colleges such as Anne Arundel Community College, University of Maryland, and Frostburg University. A few presenters came from facilities other than colleges, such as Gretchen Bonfardine who represented ASA, and Bill Brosseau who presented on behalf of Sallie Mae. The presentation and communication skills of those who spoke were impressive. All presenters were available after each session to answer any questions from the audience, and some mingled during lunch to get to know the nearly 50 participants.

Downtime consisted of interesting networking events such as the infamous picnic game, bowling and a movie night. These events offered time for the participants to team-build, compete, network, and get to know each other on a personal level. Many friends were made by all during the six-day duration, and those relationships will surely stick for years to come.

Other amenities included a fantastic array of delicious catered meals, great service by "Norm" of Brighton Suites, and outstanding leadership from Andrea Cipolla and Dawn Shockley from University of Baltimore, Robert Thomas from University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Nasim Keshavarz from Maryland Higher Education Commission. Andrea, Dawn and Robert were the hosts and coordinators for the week's sessions and events, and offered a fun-filled yet educational atmosphere for all in attendance.

The annual Neophyte Workshop is an asset to those involved in financial aid in Maryland, DC, and Delaware. The hard work of both the coordinators and participants contribute to its success year after year.
