Delaware State Report

October 5, 2006

DE ASFAA members are well on their way to another successful and, undoubtedly, fulfilling year providing help and support to our communities.

Our first-ever community service project was a heartwarming success!  From mid-August through mid-September, we collected assorted school supplies for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware.  Cristine Layton and Beth Parker spearheaded this activity for us and did an outstanding job of communicating with our schools, picking up donations and then delivering them.  Clubs receiving donations included the following:  Claymont, Claymont/Smyrna, Dover, Laurel and Oak Orchard.  Donations of school supplies were made by Delaware Tech, University of Delaware, Wilmington College, Wesley College, AES, ECMC and National Education.  We have pictures, so look for them in an upcoming “News & Views”!  I’m sure we’ll be talking about this project in the future and discussing ways to continue helping.  Thank you again to Beth and Cristine and to all who donated school supplies.  We know the children are so deserving and so appreciative of our efforts.  Looking forward to our next event, our goal is to have 100% participation from member institutions.

On September 7, we met at Delaware Tech’s Terry Campus to focus on ACG and SMART program trials and tribulations and also discussed upcoming events.  Nancy Wilson, Deputy Secretary of Education, and Maureen Laffey, Director, Delaware Higher Education Commission, were invited to join us and provided very helpful guidance and information related to these two programs.  Lighter topics of discussion focused on college nights, financial aid nights, College Goal Sunday and our community service project.

College Goal Sunday 2007 is scheduled for February 11 (snow date February 18).  Delaware will have three sites again this year, many thanks to our colleagues at Delaware Tech’s Owens, Terry and Stanton Campuses!  Stay tuned for more information and a call for volunteers.

Our next meeting will likely be during our fall conference in Cambridge MD.

Respectfully submitted,
